BFit Gyms permanently close due to coronavirus crisis, memberships will be transferred to 24 Hour Fitness

BFit Gyms will permanently close all locations tonight in the wake of the coronavirus crisis, becoming the latest business casualty during the pandemic.

In a Thursday email to customers, BFit, which operated locations in four Portland suburbs, announced it was “sad to say” that it would be closing its doors at 8 p.m. after four years in the fitness industry.

“It has been our pleasure to serve you and we wish you a healthy journey ahead,” the email read.

As it shuttered, the company facilitated this journey, working out an agreement with 24 Hour Fitness to accept its members. BFit memberships will be automatically transferred to a “24 Hour Fitness All-Club Super-Sport membership,” according to the email.

The moves gives BFit members access to the hundreds of the clubs in the 24 Hour Fitness network — including its 16 Portland-area locations — when they reopen. Dues and annual fees will remain the same and BFit members will be given the option to add a free one-year buddy pass, which allows members to bring a guest for free to workouts.

Fitness centers across Oregon were among the first businesses to close when COVID-19 hit the state and gyms across the country — including 24 Hour Fitness — came under scrutiny for continuing to charge members. Health clubs ultimately relented and workout enthusiasts scrambled to work up a sweat virtually amid stay-at-home orders.

Gov. Kate Brown included gyms in Phase 1 of Oregon’s reopening, and many across the state started opening their doors on May 15 under strict health and safety guidelines. On May 19, BFit announced on twitter it was “super excited” to be included in Phase 1 and would “establish an opening date (and) inform members” when it “received the go-ahead.”

But that opening date never arrived and, less than a month later, locations in Beaverton, Happy Valley, Gresham and Tigard/Tualatin have closed for good.
